A Timeless Church Wedding in Goa with Deep Roots and Coastal Charm
Kevin and Jeannine’s wedding was far from the typical beach wedding in Goa, but of course, the beach made its appearance. This was my first Roman Catholic wedding as a Goa wedding photographer — quite a special occasion. After the intimate church ceremony, we headed to the beach for some photos at sunset. Though I’m not usually the beach-and-sunset-type wedding photographer, the moody gray skies and windy conditions created a dramatic, beautiful backdrop that perfectly suited the moment. Kevin wrestled with Jeannine’s veil in the breeze, resulting in some of my favorite images from the day.
The Goa Catholic Community and Rich Traditions
The Goa Catholic community is a unique ethno-religious group descended from Portuguese settlers and local Konkani people, with a history dating back to the 16th century. Their rich cultural heritage shapes the character of many Goa weddings, including Kevin and Jeannine’s. This wedding was a beautiful example of tradition and modern celebration intertwining seamlessly.
A Church Wedding in Goa Set in History
The day began at Casa dos Colaços, the ancestral Portuguese villa in Margao where Jeannine’s family has lived for generations. This 150-year-old home, recently restored, offered stunning photo opportunities full of history and charm. The ceremony itself was held at the quaint chapel of Nossa Senhora on a hill overlooking Margao, a perfect spot for a classic church wedding in Goa.
“I now pronounce you man and wife” — those words felt especially heartfelt in such a setting, filled with history and meaning.
Not a Beach Wedding, but Definitely a Beach Moment
Though not a traditional beach wedding, we couldn’t resist heading to the shore right after the ceremony. Jeannine quickly slipped off her shoes to feel the sand, and Kevin almost braved the water in his suit, but the upcoming reception at the Taj Exotica called for some restraint. The beach shoot, with the dramatic weather, felt raw and authentic — a beautiful contrast to the elegance of the church ceremony and the upcoming celebration.
