Can Wedding Photographers and Wedding Planners Tie The Knot?

2017-03-17/0 Comments/in For Photographers /by Nandini Swaminathan

Can wedding photographers and wedding planners work together in synergy with the client in mind, or are they doomed to operate on separate sides of a fence, and collaborate only on a strictly commercial basis?

How does it really work? How do you get work from wedding ceremony planners, and what can you expect to hear when you do finally start getting work from wedding event planners and management companies?

Most of the wedding photographers we spoke with still receive assignments either via word of mouth, or by promoting their business online via search engine optimization and wedding portals. However, this trend is changing, and developing as the market is evolving. We decided to explore the connection and relationship, wherever relevant, between wedding photographers and wedding planners and came across a few interesting observations. Read more

2017-03-10/21 Comments/in News, SILK INSPIRE /by Sephi Bergerson

It’s been about five months since SILK INSPIRE 2016, India’s first-ever wedding photography festival, and I must admit that it took us a while to digest what really happened. The first festival, on a tight schedule of planning and execution, turned out to be one heck of an event that blew our minds away. People […]

2017-03-03/3 Comments/in For Photographers, Gear, Wedding Inspiration /by Priya Tripathi

There is something enigmatic about vintage. People tend to enjoy retro looks in fashion, rallies of vintage cars and antique furniture. Photography too is not untouched by adding the mystery quotient to photographs through film photography. Of late there has been a resurgence to film, especially medium format film, in the wedding world. Many of the photographers who shoot on film (as opposed to digital) believe that shooting film makes them more disciplined photographers. An insight into work of some of the best known photographers work explains why they prefer film photography in the digital age. Read more

8 Mistake Couples Make When Hiring A Wedding Photographer

2017-02-17/23 Comments/in Personal, Wedding Tips /by Sephi Bergerson

A few weeks back we ran a post about mistakes that wedding photographers make. I think it could be a good balance to also look at how brides and grooms can avoid some common mistakes, and turn their experience with hiring a Wedding Photographer into a more productive, and successful one.

Producing a wedding is an expensive thing. Having a budget is a very important aspect for this kind of production, but how do you build your budget? You will spend money on the venue, the decor, the dress, the catering, lights and DJ but none of this will stay. A day after the wedding all of that will find it’s place in memory. The only thing you get to keep from your wedding for generations to come are the pictures. The pictures are what you will share with your friends and show your grandchildren. Hiring a professional wedding photographer who knows how to bring out the magic is possibly the best investment you can make. This is where you should not be looking for the cheapest but for the best you can afford. Even if you stretch the budget a bit, or more, it will be quickly forgotten once the wedding is over. You will easily earn back the extra money but repeating the wedding with a better photographer will never be an option. Read more

Wedding Photographers Remember Their First Camera

2017-02-10/9 Comments/in Gear /by Priya Tripathi

We wanted to reach out to some wedding photographers who’ve been around for a while, and take them down memory lane, to the first camera they had, and the beginning of their photographic careers. The journey of successful photographers reveals something about the person they are. The most common virtue which all of them possess is unmatched and tireless passion. Some of those stories are quite surprising.  Read more

Nobody gives a shit about your ‘Art’, but you!

2017-02-03/24 Comments/in For Photographers, Wedding Inspiration /by Sephi Bergerson

Wedding photography is not about you, or your beautiful pictures. Weddings are not about money, or the food, or the decor, or any of that. It is about family. It is about memories. It is about connections, and generations, and love. Your pictures of ‘art’ might win awards, and perhaps make you look really cool. Might get you some recognition among other photographers, and justify your doubt, and calm your wounded ego about being only a ‘wedding photographer’ (and not an artist), but they are not important. What is important, what will stay for life, what the bride is going to care about in time when her dear ones are no more, is that she has a good picture with her grandmother, or her parents. This is what is important! Now here is the thing, and etch this deep in your subconscious: NO ONE GIVES A SHIT ABOUT YOUR ART! Read more

2017-01-28/6 Comments/in Interview /by Malavika Vyawahare

Ashish Chawla has photographed national icons, everyone from Bollywood stars like Shah Rukh Khan and Ajay Devgan to cricketers like Virat Kohli and Yuvraj Singh, but Ashish Chawla is a Delhi boy at heart. This fashion photographer was born in the capital and spent his formative years in the city, completing his Bachelors in Fine Arts from the College of Art. He graduated from College of Art in 1997 and has been in the fashion and commercial photography world for almost 20 years.

Ashish shoots both advertorial and editorial photographs. He was in Maldives recently on an editorial shoot for Travel & Leisure and Weddings and Honeymoons. We thought this was a good time to catch up with him, and hear his views as to how fashion photography diverges from and complements wedding photography, and his discovery of the synergy at SILK PHOTOS. 2017-01-20/23 Comments/in For Photographers /by Sephi Bergerson

The number of wedding photographers in India had jumped to an estimated number of 250,000 (!), but many operate without much knowledge on business practices, copyright laws, usage rights, and more. What we are trying to do with the SILK blog is bring fresh and relevant content on the industry of wedding photography Tips in India, but at the same time also look at some of the changes that we feel are essential to implement into the industry in order to bring it up to a certain quality standard.

Many have come into the world of wedding photography with no prior schooling or professional training and have very little knowledge about the business side of things. Others might have a good sense of business but are missing out on some day-to-day practices that could make their lives easier.

To make a long story short, here is a short list of tips that will hopefully help you avoid some common mistakes in the future. Some of these tips are easy to follow, others are a must-do, and a few are very difficult to incorporate into your workflow. In my humble opinion these are all important things to consider.

Do women make better wedding photographers than men?

2017-01-13/7 Comments/in Industry News, Wedding Inspiration /by Malavika Vyawahare

In the last few years we have seen a dramatic change in the realities of wedding photography in India, as more and more women choose to take up the profession, which was previously a men-only dominated field. Do women make better wedding photographers than men? The jury is still out on that one. Most women wedding photographers believe they have an edge when it comes to capturing the bride on the special day.

“It is relatively easy for a woman to open up to another woman,” Puja Kedia, a Surat-based wedding photographer says, “that makes me a bride’s best friend for that particular day.” Others like Payal Kumar, who has been shooting weddings for five years says that her proximity to the bride and the constant attention she trains on the lady means that at certain weddings she almost gets designated as bridesmaid. Rimi Sen, a mentee in the RAW SILK program, describes feeling like she is part of the family even before the actual wedding and getting easier access to places than other photographers. Read more
